Earthquake Information Statement for January 29th, 2020

No Tsunami Threat following a magnitude 3.7 earthquake occurred in the vicinity of Kalapana Gardens Wednesday afternoon (January 29th).

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports a magnitude 3.7 earthquake had occurred in the region of Kalapana Gardens, Puna at 12:23 pm Hawaii Standard Time (HST) on Wednesday afternoon (January 29th).


Based on all assessments completed by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) and National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) in Palmer, Alaska: There is NO TSUNAMI THREAT to the Island and the State of Hawaii. Again, NO TSUNAMI THREAT. This earthquake was not strong enough to generate a Pacific-wide Tsunami.


This will be the only information statement for this event unless further data is received.

 

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD), Hawaii Police Department (HPD), and Hawaii County Civil Defense have received no reports of damage or injuries as a result of the earthquake in Kalapana as of 1:15 pm Wednesday afternoon.


Aftershocks are possible and officials ask all Hawaii Island residents to check your utility connections for any damage.
