Earthquake Information Statement for January 5th, 2021

No Tsunami Threat to the Island of Hawaii following a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in the region of Kermadec Islands Tuesday evening (January 5th).

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports a magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred in the region of Kermadec Islands (near the Kermadec Trench) at depth of 16 miles (26.1 kilometers) Tuesday evening (January 5th) at 8:20 pm Hawaii Standard Time (HST).


The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) and the United States Tsunami Warning Center (USTWC) has completed a full assessment for this earthquake and reports that there is NO TSUNAMI THREAT TO THE ISLAND AND STATE OF HAWAI'I. Again, NO TSUNAMI THREAT.


This will be the only statement for this event unless further data is received.
