Earthquake Information Update # 2 for October 19th, 2020

A Tsunami Advisory for the Island of Hawaii has been canceled as of 6:58 pm Monday evening (October 19th).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) for reports the Tsunami Advisory for the Island of Hawaii has been canceled or ended as of 6:58 pm Monday evening (October 19th).


No damage or injuries have been reported to the Hawaii Fire Department (HFD), Hawaii Police Department (HPD), and Hawaii County Civil Defense on Hawaii Island. Moderate tide changes were reported around the Hilo Bay area and minor tidal changes were reported at Kawaihae Harbor in South Kohala and Honokohau Harbor in North Kona.


While the event has ended, some minor sea-level changes and strong and unusual changes may persist for some coastal areas and for the next several hours. Swimmers and boaters are being asked to use caution while in the water.


This will be the final message for this event unless further data is received.


We have also sent an inquiry to PTWC regarding the delayed message and waiting for a reply. We will post that statement, once that becomes available.

 NOTE - DART MEASUREMENTS ARE FROM THE DEEP OCEAN AND THEY
        ARE GENERALLY MUCH SMALLER THAN WOULD BE COASTAL
         MEASUREMENTS AT SIMILAR LOCATIONS.

EVALUATION

 TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS ACROSS THE STATE OF HAWAII ARE NOW BELOW
 ADVISORY LEVELS AND ARE CONTINUING TO DIMINISH. MEASUREMENTS
 RECORDED FOR KAHULUI AND HILO ARE NOW BELOW ADVISORY LEVEL.
 BASED ON ALL AVAILABLE DATA THE PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER
 IS NOW CANCELLING THE TSUNAMI ADVISORY. SMALL SEA LEVEL CHANGES
 AND STRONG OR UNUSUAL CURRENTS MAY PERSIST FOR SEVERAL ADDITIONAL
 HOURS IN SOME COASTAL AREAS AND APPROPRIATE CAUTION SHOULD BE
 EXERCISED BY BOATERS AND SWIMMERS.

THIS WILL BE THE FINAL MESSAGE ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS
ADDITIONAL DATA ARE RECEIVED.
