Hawaii Island Traffic Incidents Update for November 22nd, 2019

Emergency Crews on Hawaii Island responded to 18 different traffic incidents on Wednesday, November 20th to Thursday, November 21st.

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a total of 18 different traffic collisions around Hawaii Island from 12 am Wednesday, November 20th to 11:59 pm Thursday, November 21st.


Breakdown on the traffic incidents by district:

- North Kona: 8 Incidents

- 3 on 11/20

- All incidents were non-injury accidents

- One incident not listed below was a minor vehicle accident at the intersection of Palani Road and Ane Keohokalole Highway. No Injuries

- 5 on 11/21

- 4 Non-Injury accidents

- One of two incidents not listed below was a minor vehicle accident at the intersection of Palani Road and Ane Keohokalole Highway Thursday evening. No Injuries.

- The second incident was a two-vehicle (hit and run) accident at Honokohau Harbor Thursday evening. No injuries were reported.

- 1 Major Accident

- South Kona: 1 Incident

- 1 incident has been classified as a Major Accident

- South Kohala: 1 Incident

- 1 on 11/20

- 1 incident has been classified as a Major Accident - Ka'u: 1 Incident

- That incident was a Non-Injury Accident

- That incident not listed below was a single-vehicle accident on Hokulani Boulevard in Hawaiian Ranchos Thursday evening at 5:24 pm. No injuries and the driver of the vehicle left the scene. - South Hilo: 3 Incidents

- 3 on 11/21

- All incidents were Non-Injury Accidents

- One of two incidents not listed below was a minor vehicle accident in the parking lot of Walmart Hilo. No injuries.

- The second incident not listed below was a single-vehicle accident Thursday evening at the the intersection of Haihai Street and Laula Road at 10:06 pm. No injuries were reported. - Puna: 5 incidents

- One incident not listed was minor vehicle accident in the parking lot of the Kea'au Shopping Center. No injuries.

We highlight the notable and also major incidents that have occurred over the past couple of days on Hawaii Island.


  • The first notable incident occurred on Wednesday (November 20th) in Puna at the 15-1600 block of Kaloli Drive in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision at 4:34 am. Reports came in that a Silver Toyota Tacoma flipped over fronting a residence on Kaloli Drive. Emergency crews arrived on scene and found vehicle unoccupied and a short search of the area was conducted to locate the driver. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

  • The second notable incident occurred on Wednesday in North Kona at the 75-200 Block of Oni Oni Street in Kailua-Kona at 7:53 am. Reports came in that vehicle rear-end a parked vehicle on Oni Oni Street with the driver of the involved had left the scene. The driver was later found and taken into custody by HPD. The driver suffered no injuries. HPD officers were also searching for the same vehicle prior to the collision on Oni Oni Street. Details on the circumstances for the search were not disclosed.

  • The third notable/major incident occurred on Wednesday in South Kohala at the intersection of Mauna Lani Drive and Queen Kaahumanu Hwy (Highway 19) at 10:02 am. Reports came in that two-vehicle accident (T-bone Type) involving a Jeep Wrangler and Chevy Camaro collided with one vehicle in a lane of traffic. One person was transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital in serious condition with the occupants of the other vehicle suffered no injuries or refused medical treatment. The roadway was clear just after 11:20 am Wednesday morning.

  • The fourth notable/major incident occurred on Wednesday in South Kona just northwest of the 110-mile marker front Napa Auto Parts in Captain Cook. A two-vehicle accident that sent a 16-year-old Male to the Kona Community Hospital in Serious Condition and the occupants of the other vehicle was not injured.

  • The fifth notable incident occurred on Wednesday in North Kona at the intersection of Lunapule Street and Ali'i Drive in Kailua-Kona at 7:48 pm. Reports came in that a two-vehicle (T-Bone Type) accident occurred at the intersection all occupants of both vehicles were awaiting the arrival of emergency vehicles.

  • The sixth notable incident occurred on Thursday (November 21st) in Puna at the intersection of Kea'au-Pahoa Bypass Road (Highway 130) and Milo Street fronting CU Hawaii in Kea'au at 7:29 am. Reports came that two-vehicle accident (Honda Accord & Silver Jeep) with injuries had occurred in the Hilo bound lanes and was off the roadway awaiting the arrival of emergency crews. That accident sent a 17-year-old female to the Hilo Medical Center in Good Condition, occupants of the vehicles suffered no injuries.

  • The seventh notable incident occurred on Thursday in South Hilo at the intersection of Macadamia Road and Highway 11. Reports came in that a three-vehicle accident (rear-end type) occurred in the Hilo bound lanes of Highway 11 just Hilo side of Macadamia Road and were all off the roadway awaiting the arrival of emergency crews. Occupants of all vehicles suffered no injuries or refused medical treatment at the scene.

  • The eighth notable incident occurred on Thursday in Puna at the intersection of Kaloli Drive and 25th Avenue in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision at 11:06 am. Reports came in that single-vehicle (pickup truck) rolled over and landed into the brush off of Kaloli Drive. The driver of the vehicle had self extricated prior to emergency crews arriving on scene. The driver of the pickup suffered no injuries.

  • The ninth notable incident occurred on Thursday also in Puna at the Intersection of 5th Avenue & Kaloli Drive in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. Reports came in that a single-vehicle with multiple occupants hit a utility pole near the intersection and brought down utility lines. Once emergency crews arrived on scene, determined all the occupants of the vehicle had fled the scene and HPD officers conducted a short search for the occupants. No further details were provided.

  • The tenth notable incident occurred on Thursday in North Kona at the intersection of Walua Road & Kuakini Highway fronting Pottery Terrace in Kailua-Kona at 2:38 pm. Reports came in that two-vehicles collided at the intersection with numerous bystanders helping the drivers and occupants involved until emergency crews arrived on scene. This incident sent a female in her 70's to the Kona Community Hospital in Serious condition. The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured or refused medical treatment at the scene.

  • The eleventh notable incident occurred on Thursday also in North Kona happening at the 73-1000 block of Kaiminani Drive just mauka of Kona Palisades Recreation Center in Kalaoa. Reports came in that three-vehicle (rear-end type) accident occurred and vehicles moved off the roadway awaiting the arrival of emergency crews. No injuries were reported at this incident.

  • The twelfth notable incident occurred on Thursday also in North Kona on Kuakini Highway just south of the 117-mile marker in Keauhou at 6:21 pm. Reports came in of a two-vehicle (head-on type) accident occurred on Kuakini Highway and both reported to be roadway with all occupants out of the vehicles awaiting emergency crews to arrive on scene. No injuries were reported and the roadway was cleared just after 7:00 pm.
