Hawaii Island Weather Advisory Update # 2 for April 29th, 2019
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a
- Flood advisory for the island of Hawaii in Hawaii County
- Until 9:00 PM HST.
- At 605 PM HST, radar indicated areas of heavy rain over the windward and leeward coasts of the Big Island. The heaviest rain was located between Kailua-Kona and Upolu Point, where rainfall rates of around 2 inches per hour. Minor flooding of low lying and poor drainage areas can be expected.
- Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to:
Hilo, Kailua-Kona, Paauilo, Waipio Valley, Orchidlands Estates, Hawi, Keaau, Waimea, Kawaihae, the Kohala Mountain Road, and the Mamalahoa Highway between Waimea and Kalaoa.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don`t drown.
This advisory may need to be extended beyond 9:00 PM HST if heavy rain persists.
