Hawaii Island Weather Update for July 9th, 2020

HIRSC Weather Team continues to closely monitor Tropical Storm Cristina in the East Pacific Basin. Cristina is expected to become a hurricane on Friday morning and expected to dissipate going into the new work week.


Forecast models show an increase in windward and mauka showers from remnants from Cristina is expected for Hawaii Island by the end of next week.


One area of interest located over Central America is expected to cross into the East Pacific this weekend and has a high chance of developing into an organized storm.


HIRSC Weather Team will continue to monitor these systems as we are getting into the heart of the 2020 Hurricane Season. The next full HIRSC update on all systems will be made tomorrow evening (Thursday evening, July 9th).

DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK

At 300 AM MDT (0900 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Cristina was
located near latitude 18.8 North, longitude 113.0 West.  Cristina is
moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h) and this
general motion with a gradual bend to the west is expected during
the next few days.

Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher
gusts.  Cristina could become a hurricane later today, however, a
weakening trend should begin by tonight.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km)
from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 993 mb (29.33 inches).

For the eastern North Pacific...east of 140 degrees west longitude:

The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical 
Storm Cristina, located just west-southwest of Socorro Island.

1. A strong tropical wave located over Central America is expected to 
move over the far eastern Pacific in a day or so. Environmental 
conditions are forecast to be conducive for development of this 
system, and a tropical depression will likely form early next week 
while it moves quickly westward well south of the coast of Mexico.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...10 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...high...70 percent.
