The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a residential fire in Hilo Wednesday afternoon (April 15th).

The initial call came in at 3:55 pm Wednesday afternoon and HFD crews from Haihai, Central, and Kaumana Fire Stations along with Battalion 1 and HPD officers from the South Hilo Patrol responded to the scene located at the 70 block of Laula Road in Hilo.

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, a 911 call came in from a neighbor for a report of smoke and flames coming from the garage/open lanai area of a residence. Neighbors were also working to evacuate the residents from surrounding residences and also the residence where the fire was occurring, which were not at the residence at the time of the fire.

Once emergency crews arrived on the scene, first arriving HFD crews were able to have the fire under control within minutes after on scene and had the fire contained to the garage/open lanai area of the residences. Once under control, HFD crews continued with overhauling and also conducted a quick assessment of the residence for any further fire spread.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, no injuries were reported, and the American Red Cross (ARC) will be assisting the occupants with damage assessment.
