Hilo Information Update for August 8th, 2019
Propane leak leads to the temporary evacuation and closure of Kawailani Street and business complex in Hilo Thursday evening (August 8th).

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) and the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) are currently on scene of a HAZ-MAT Incident (Propane Leak) at a business complex located at the intersection of Kawailani Street and Kinoole Street in South Hilo Thursday evening (August 8th).
The initial call came in at 9:46 pm and crews from the Kawailani and Kaumana Fire Stations along with Battalion 1 responded to the scene at business complex located at 2200 block of Kinoole Street.
Upon the arrival of HFD and HPD units, vehicle struck a propane gas meter located near the business complex building and occupants of the businesses noticed a odor shortly after the incident had occurred and immediately evacuated shortly thereafter.
Once HFD crews on scene, they immediately worked to mitigate/stop propane leak. HPD units continued evacuating the business complex and also temporarily closed Kawailani Street from Kinoole Street to Kimo Place while HFD crews were working to stop the leak. Hawaii Gas Company has been notified of the incident and troubleshooter was en-route to the scene to begin repairs.
