Fire causes significant damage to a residence in Kawailani, South Hilo Sunday evening (December 15th).
The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a residential structure fire that occurred Sunday evening (December 16th) in Kawailani, South Hilo.
The initial call came in 8:22 pm Sunday evening and HFD crews from the Haihai, Waiakea, Kaumana, and Central Fire Stations along with Battalion 1 and HPD officers from the South Hilo Patrol responded to the scene located at the 300 block of Kehaulani Street in Kawailani, South Hilo.
Upon the arrival of HFD crews, neighbors reported the residence (described as a two-story single-family dwelling) was reported to be fully engulfed with smoke and flames coming from all sides of the structure. Flames were also visible from 3 blocks away. Neighbors also reported the occupants were not home at the time of the fire.
Once HFD crews arrived on scene, they found the two-story residence fully engulfed in flames and crews went into a defensive/offensive mode of fire attack to gain control of the fire. They were able to have the fire under control at 8:39 pm Sunday evening and declared the fire extinguished at 9:11 pm Sunday evening. Shortly thereafter, HFD crews remained on scene and were conducting mop-up and overhauling operations through the rest of Sunday evening. HFD crews reported the fire had caused significant damage to both floors of the residence.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
