The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a residential structure fire on Kino'ole Street near the Kino'ole Senior Residences in Hilo early Saturday morning (December 26th).
The initial call came in at 12:54 am Saturday morning and HFD crews from the Haihai, Central, Kaumana, and Waiakea Fire Stations along with Battalion 1 and HPD Officers from the South Hilo Patrol responded to the scene located at 2000 block of Kino'ole Street near West Kahaopea Street.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in from numerous neighbors near the residence reporting a structure fire (residence being described as a single-story family dwelling). The residence was reported to be abandoned at the time of the incident, however, neighbors noted an older male leaving the residence on foot on Kino'ole Street following the first call to 911.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, a first arriving HFD Engine found the residence fully engulfed in flames and a large portion of the roof had collapsed into the structure. HFD crews went into a defensive fire fighting mode and worked to gain control of the fire. The fire was declared under control at 1:12 am Saturday morning and HFD crews were still at the scene completing mop-up and overhaul operations to remnants of the structure intact.
No injuries have been reported and an HFD Fire Inspector was en-route to the scene to begin an investigation into the cause of the fire.
