The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) is at the scene of a commercial building structure fire at an address off of Kilauea Avenue near Aupuni Street in Hilo late Sunday morning (December 27th).

The initial call came in at 11:17 am Sunday morning and HFD Crews from the Central, Waiakea, Kaumana, and Haihai Fire Stations along with Battalion 1 and HPD Officers from the South Hilo Patrol responded to the scene located at 700 block of Kilauea Avenue.

Preliminary details we have received is that a nearby business reported large amounts of water flowing from a two-story commercial/apartment building located on the mauka (mountainside) of Kilauea Avenue with heavy smoke coming from a second-story apartment window, with occupants evacuating the structure prior to the arrival of emergency crews.

Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HPD Officers assisted with completing evacuation efforts while HFD Crews went into both an offensive and defensive firefighting mode to gain control of the fire.

Currently, at this time, the fire is under control with HFD crews beginning overhaul and salvage operations underway, which appears to be contained to the second story of the structure with heavy water damage to the first-floor units. It's unknown at this time if nearby businesses and structures suffered damage as a result of the fire.

HPD Officers has closed Kilauea Avenue from Pauahi Street to Mohouli Street and Aupuni Street at Kilauea Avenue while HFD crews continue to battle the blaze. Officials are asking the public to please avoid the area as numerous onlookers have arrived in the area and of concern to emergency crews.

We will provide an update as it becomes available.
