One person critically injured in a two-vehicle collision in Waiākea Uka Tuesday afternoon (March 23rd).

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Ainaola Drive in Waiākea Uka, South Hilo Tuesday afternoon (March 23rd).
The initial call came in at 2:09 pm Tuesday afternoon and HFD Crews from the Haihai Fire Station along with HPD Officers from the South Hilo Patrol and Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) responded to the scene located at the 400 block of Ainaola Drive in Waiākea Uka.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, numerous reports came into 911 reporting a vehicle (described as a Green Toyota Pickup) had collided with another vehicle (described as a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck) on Ainaola Drive. The operator (described as a male in his 60s) of the pickup truck was reported to have suffered critical injuries following the collision and report to be pinned within the vehicle. It was noted that the operator was not wearing a seat belt and the vehicle suffered extensive damage.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Crews immediately worked to extricate the operator from the vehicle utilizing Jaws of Life. Once extricated from the vehicle, HFD Medics immediately began life-saving measures on the male patient and later transported him to the Hilo Medical Center in extremely critical condition, where at this time, no updates were provided on his condition.
Due to the patient's condition at transport, HPD Officers closed Ainaola Drive between Mikokoi Street and Komohana Street while TEU Officers began their investigation into the crash.
South Hilo district was under a flood advisory at the time, however, it's unknown at this time if the wet conditions were a factor in this collision.
