Hilo Information Update for May 7th, 2021

Teenager seriously injured following a vehicle vs pedestrian collision fronting the University of Hawai'i at Hilo (UHH) Campus Friday evening (May 7th).

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a vehicle vs pedestrian collision on West Kawili Street in Hilo Friday evening (May 7th).


The initial call came in at 8:33 pm Friday evening and HFD Crews from the Haihai Fire Station along with HPD Officers from the South Hilo Patrol responded to the scene located 200 block of West Kawili Street fronting the University of Hawai'i at Hilo (UHH) Campus.


Upon the arrival of emergency crews, numerous came into 911 reporting a skateboarder (described as a male in his teens, under the age of 16) was riding down West Kawili Street fronting UHH Campus when then struck by a vehicle (not immediately disclosed) also traveling on West Kawili Street at an unknown speed and landing on his back on the roadway. Following the collision, numerous bystanders and the driver involved immediately rendered aid to the male patient until emergency crews arrived at the scene.


Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medic immediately took over medical care to the male patient. The patient was initially unconscious following the collision, however, later regained consciousness when emergency crews arrived on the scene sitting upright, suffering multiple injuries to the head and face. HFD Medic then transported the teenager to the Hilo Medical Center in serious condition for further medical treatment.


HPD continues to investigate the incident and it's unknown at this time if the teenager was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
