The Hawaii Police Department (HPD) along with the Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) responded to a report of an apparent weapon/unknown type disturbance incident at an apartment complex in Hilo late Saturday evening (May 8th).
The initial call came in at 10:52 pm Saturday evening and HPD Officers from the South Hilo Patrol along with Criminal Investigation Section (CIS) and HFD Crews from the Central and Haihai Fire Station responded to the scene located at the 200 block of Kekuanaoa Street near the Old Pu'ueo Poi Factory in Hilo.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, numerous reports came into HPD Dispatch reporting an unknown type disturbance/large affray involving up to 8 individuals happening at an apartment complex near the Old Pu'ueo Poi Factory in Hilo. The large affray later led to an apparent stabbing on three individuals (all being described as males and age ranging from teens to 40s) at the scene. Bystanders at the scene assisted with diffusing the situation and also providing basic medical care to the injured individuals until emergency crews arrived at the scene.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HPD Officers immediately worked safely to secure the scene and also diffuse the large affray. Once the scene was declared safe, HFD Medics immediately took over medical care to all three patients and then later transported them to the Hilo Medical Center for further medical treatment. It was noted that 2 of the patients (one male teenager and a male in his 40s) were listed in critical condition at the time of transport and the third patient (one male teenager) condition was listed as serious, all three patients suffered multiple stab wounds.
One adult male was taken into custody by HPD Officers and later transported to the East Hawaii Detention Center for further processing. It's unknown at this time if the arrest made at the scene was related to the apparent weapon incident.
HPD Detectives from CIS later arrived at the scene and began their investigation into the incident.
