The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a structure fire at an address located Punawai Street in Hilo Monday afternoon (September 14th).

The initial call came in at 1:05 pm and HFD crews from the Kaumana, Central, Waiakea, and Haihai Fire Stations along with Battalion 1 and HPD officers from the South Hilo Patrol responded to the scene located 37 Punawai Street in Hilo.

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in from numerous parties reporting dark black smoke was visible coming from a residence above Komohana Street in Hilo, and neighbors on Punawai Street later confirmed the smoke and flames were coming from the residence (described as a two-story single-family dwelling) and all parties had safely exited the residence and were attempting to extinguish the fire prior to emergency crews arrival.

Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD crews immediately worked to gain control of the fire and prevent further spread to nearby structures. Thanks to quick response, HFD crews were able to quickly have the fire extinguished at 1:28 pm Monday afternoon and soon after commenced with overhaul and salvaging operations at the scene.

No injuries were reported and the American Red Cross is assisting the residents affected by the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
