Honaunau Information Update # 2 for June 17th, 2019

2 Vehicles and Service (Gas) Station damaged in a fire Monday morning (June 17th).

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a vehicle fire at the Spirit Gas Station (or known locally as Patel's Service Station) in Honaunau Monday morning (June 17th).


The initial call came in at 8:45 am and HFD crews from the Captain Cook, Keauhou, Waikoloa (Tanker 16), and Kailua Fire Stations along with Battalion 2 responded to the scene located at the Spirit Gas Station (or known locally as Patel's Service Station) at the 83-8200 block of Highway 11 near 106-mile marker in Honaunau.


Upon the arrival of HFD crews, initially was a vehicle fire under the awning near the fuel pumps was on fire and later spread to another vehicle and to the exterior and canopy/awning of the service station. All occupants of the service and the vehicles had safely evacuated the area and awaited the arrival of HFD crews.


Once on scene, HFD crews immediately went into a defensive operation mode to extinguish gain control of fire. HFD personnel was able to have the fire under control just after 9:02 am Monday morning and had it contained to the exterior of the service station and vehicles. HFD crews immediately began overhauling and mop-up operations soon after gaining control/containment of the fire.


HPD closed Highway 11 between the 106-mile marker and Middle Keei Road for brief period while HFD crews worked to extinguished the fire.


One person, male in his 50's was taken to the Kona Community Hospital in Serious Condition by private vehicle and later transferred to a burn center on Oahu. No other injuries reported.


Fire was declared out just before 11:00 am Monday morning. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and no damage estimate was made available.
