Honokāne Information Update for May 19th, 2021

Injured hiker rescued from Honokāne Iki Valley in North Kohala Wednesday morning (May 19th).

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with Hawaii Police Department (HFD) responded to a report of an injured on the 'Āwini Trail in Honokāne Iki Valley in the North Kohala District Wednesday morning (May 19th).


The initial call came in at 7:15 am Wednesday morning and HFD Crews from the North Kohala Fire Station along with Chopper 1 and Chopper 2 and HPD Officers from the North Kohala Patrol responded to the scene located on the beach in Honokāne Iki Valley in North Kohala.


Upon the arrival of emergency crews, a report came in from a hiker on the 'Āwini Trail reporting a friend (described as a male in his 20s) who was hiking with the reporting party, had suffered a knee injury while hiking on the trail inside Honokāne Iki Valley and was waiting for emergency crews on a float on the beach. The reporting party had hiked up on the ridge to call for help.


Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Chopper 2 and Chopper 1 conducted a brief search of the area and located the injured hiker in Honokāne Iki Valley on the beach and Chopper 2 landed nearby and package the patient for transport to the landing zone (LZ) located near Pololū Valley Lookout to an awaiting HFD Medic. Once Chopper 2 arrived at the LZ, HFD Medic personnel then transported the male patient to the Kohala Hospital in stable condition for further medical treatment.
