The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a single-vehicle rollover collision on Waipio Valley Road in Waipio Valley Friday afternoon (July 31st).
The initial call came in at 2:18 pm Friday afternoon and HFD crews from the Honoka'a Fire Station along with HPD officers from the Hamakua Patrol responded to the scene located approximately 1/2-mile below the Waipio Valley Lookout.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in from bystanders for a report of single-vehicle (described as a Red Toyota SUV) traveling on Waipio Valley Road had lost its brakes and rolled over on the roadway, landing right-side up. All occupants (described 4 people in total) were able to safely self-extricate themselves from the vehicle. One of the occupants of the vehicle (described as a female in her 30's) had suffered serious injuries and bystanders at the scene, assisted with providing basic medical aid until emergency crews arrived at the scene.
Once emergency crews arrived in the area and due to the location of the collision, HFD crews utilized smaller 4x4 vehicles to access the scene. Once crews reached the scene, HFD Medics took over medical care on the female occupant and extricated her from the scene to an awaiting medic at the Waipio Valley Lookout, where they later transported the female patient to the North Hawaii Community Hospital in serious condition.
The other occupants of the vehicle were evaluated by HFD Medics, however, declined further medical treatment or transport at the scene.
HPD continues to investigate the collision.
