Hookena Information Update for May 27th, 2020

One person is in extremely critical condition following an apparent drowning at Ho'okena Beach late Wednesday morning (May 27th).

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of an apparent drowning at Ho'okena Beach late Wednesday afternoon (May 27th).


The initial call came in at 11:40 am Wednesday morning and HFD crews from the Captain Cook Fire Station along with HPD officers from the Kona Patrol responded to the scene located at Ho'okena Beach Park in South Kona.


Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in from bystanders that a female party (described to be in her 20's to 30's), who was swimming in the waters offshore of Ho'okena Beach, was later found unresponsive in the water, and bystanders brought her to back to shore where they immediately began life-saving measures until emergency crews arrived at the scene.


Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medics immediately took over life-saving measures and later transported the female victim to the Kona Community Hospital in extremely critical condition, where at this time, her condition remains unknown.


HPD is continuing to investigate the incident.
