The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision on Highway 190 (Hawaii Belt Road) in the area of Hualalai Ranch in North Kona Monday morning (August 31st).

The initial call came in at 10:38 am Monday morning and HFD crews from the Makalei and Kailua Fire Stations along with HPD officers and State of Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) - Highways Division crews responded to the scene located on Highway 190 north of the 29-mile marker in North Kona.

Location of the collision

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in from bystanders reporting a semi-tractor (described as a Kenworth T800) with a 40-foot trailer traveling on Highway 190 had braked hard to avoid a vehicle that came into the semis lane, which caused the semi to jack-knifed and hit an embankment on the side of Highway 190. Following the collision, the operator of the semi (described as a male in his late 20's) was able to self-extricate from the semi, suffered injuries as a result of the collision, and was awaiting the arrival of emergency crews.

The semi and trailer were blocking all lanes of traffic and bystanders were working to turn traffic around on Highway 190 and vehicles traveling from the scene were also working to warn other motorists of the traffic hazard by the 29-mile marker.

Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medics began a medical assessment of the operator, while other HFD crews assessed the condition of the semi and trailer. They determined the semi suffered severe damage and approximately 70-gallons of diesel fuel had spilled onto the highway and request the assistance of HDOT crews to assist with clean up of the spill.

HFD Medics later the male operator to the Kona Community Hospital in fair (good) condition for further treatment. No other injuries were reported as a result of the collision.

HPD officers closed Highway 190 from Kaiminani Drive in North Kona to Daniel K. Inouye Highway (or Saddle Road/Highway 200) in South Kohala while HDOT crews and privately contracted towing company worked to clear the semi from the roadway.
