Ka’u Information Update # 2 for March 26th, 2019

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) is currently on scene of a confirmed structure fire in the Discovery Harbor Subdivision near Na’alehu, Ka’u.
The initial call came in at 2:46 pm Tuesday Afternoon (March 26th) and crews from the Pahala, Na’alehu, HOVE, and Volcano Fire stations along with the volunteers from Discovery Harbor station responded to the scene located at the 94-5700 block of Au Moku Place within the Discovery Harbor subdivision.
Prior to the arrival of HFD crews, neighboring residences reported hearing small explosions and seeing smoke from coming from the residences. They also determined that the owners of the residences were not home at the time of the fire.
Once HFD crews arrived on scene, they found the rear half of the single-story structure fully involved and approximately 15-20 feet from the nearest residences. They worked a combination (Offensive and Defensive) attack on the fire and also worked to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby residences in close proximity.
HFD had the fire under control at 4:05 pm on Tuesday Afternoon. At last check, HFD crews were last still on scene completing mop-up and salvaging operations. Fire investigators were also on scene begin their investigation into the cause of the fire.
