The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) are currently on scene of a structure fire in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision in Ka'u Monday evening (April 22nd).
The initial call came at 7:06 pm and crews from the HOVE, Na'alehu, and Pahala Fire Stations along with Battalion 2 and volunteers from the Ocean View station responded to the scene located 92-9000 block of Tree Fern Lane near the corner of Sea Breeze Parkway in HOVE. Upon the arrival of HFD crews, neighbors reported the structure fully engulfed in flames with smoke coming from the structure and fire spreading to surrounding brush near the structure. The structure also was reported to still be under construction and unoccupied.
Once crews arrived on scene, HFD crews found 2-story unfinished structure fully engulfed and immediately began defensive firefighting operations to gain control of the fire and to prevent fire from spreading to surrounding structures located 50 feet away from the structure. Due to limited water supply in the subdivision, crews utilized engine and tanker unit to shuttle water to the scene.
Crews were able to have the fire under control at 8:10 pm Monday evening and at last check, HFD crews were still on scene. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
