Small Brush Fire causes a closure of Highway 11 in Na'alehu Thursday afternoon (May 9th)
The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) are currently on scene of brush fire that started Thursday afternoon in Na'alehu, Ka'u (May 9th).
The initial call came in just after 2:30 pm Thursday afternoon and crews from the Pahala, Na'alehu, and Volcano Fire Stations along with Battalion 1, Chopper 1, and volunteers from the Na'alehu, Discovery Harbor, and Pahala stations responded to the scene located on Highway 11 near the 62-mile marker. Upon the arrival of HFD crews, reporting parties reported a small area of brush was burning with flames visible.
The HPD reports Highway 11 between the 61 and 63-mile marker is closed to all traffic temporarily while crews continue to extinguish hot spots and mop up operations. Motorist are asked to use Old Cane Haul Road (Ka'alaiki Road).
