The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 11 (Mamalahoa Highway) near Kawa Flats in Ka'u Tuesday afternoon (September 29th).

The initial call came in at 2:10 pm Tuesday afternoon and HFD crews from the Pahala and Na'alehu Fire Stations along with HPD officers from the Ka'u Patrol responded to the scene located at the 59-mile marker on Highway 11 just south of Kawa Flats.

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in that vehicle (described as a white sedan) was attempting to pass another vehicle on Highway 11, when the operator of the vehicle lost control and rolled over in the lava field/pasture along the mauka (mountain) side of Highway 11 by the 59-mile marker. In the course of the rollover, the operator of the vehicle (described as a female as the age of 19) was ejected and suffered serious and traumatic injuries. Bystanders at the scene provided basic medical aid until emergency crews arrived at the scene.

Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medics immediately took over medical treatment of the female operator and later transported the female operator to the Hilo Medical Center with her condition listed in serious condition.

HPD continues to investigate the incident.
