The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a structure fire at a business off of Pawai Place Saturday morning (January 2nd).

The initial call came in at 6:07 am Saturday morning and HFD crews from the Kailua, Keauhou, and Makalei Fire Stations along with Battalion 2, Volunteers from the Kalaoa Mauka, and HPD Officers responded to the scene located at the 74-5500 block of Pawai Place (located on Kona Elks Place) in Kailua-Kona.

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in from security and bystanders in the area reporting heavy smoke was visible coming from a business (the building is described as a two-story metal frame building approximately 2,000 square feet in size) and transmission power lines coming from the building was reported to be arcing as well as a result of the fire. Smoke from the fire was visible from throughout Kailua Village, Kealakehe, and also the Holualoa.

Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, the first arriving HFD crews found smoke and flames coming from the structure, worked to gain control of the fire, and make entry into the structure. Once entry was made into the structure, crews had the fire quickly under control at 6:23 am Saturday morning and immediately began overhaul and salvage operations. The fire fully extinguished at 6:54 am Saturday morning.

An HFD Fire Inspector later arrived at the scene and began an investigation into the cause of the fire, which at this time remains unknown/under investigation. No injuries were reported and the damage amount was not immediately available.
