The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a vehicle fire in the drive-thru lane at Taco Bell in Kailua-Kona Wednesday evening (May 27th).

The initial call came in at 5:44 pm Wednesday evening and HFD crews from the Kailua-Kona Fire Station along with HPD officers from the Kona Patrol responded to the scene located 74-5600 block of Palani Road in Kailua-Kona.

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in from bystanders that a vehicle (described as an older model Volkswagen van) was reported to be fully engulfed in flames in the drive-thru lane of Taco Bell and parked close to the take-out window.

Occupants of the van had safely exited the vehicle and bystanders/employees at the scene attempted to extinguished the fire utilizing a garden hose and fire extinguisher until emergency crews arrived at the scene. Employees and patrons inside Taco Bell had also evacuated to a safe spot as a precaution.

Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD crews immediately worked to extinguished the vehicle fire and prevent further spread to the building. HFD personnel had the fire under control and extinguished shortly after arriving at the scene. The fire was contained to the trunk area of the Volkswagen van and did not spread into the structure.

Taco Bell drive-thru was temporarily closed while HFD crews worked to extinguish the fire and until the vehicle was later towed/remove from the drive-thru lane.

No injuries to the occupants of the vehicle, patrons, or employees were reported.
