The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision on Palani Road above the Henry Street intersection in Kailua-Kona Friday morning (November 20th).
The initial call came in at 9:48 am Friday morning and HFD crews from the Kailua-Kona Fire Station along with HPD officers from the Kona Patrol responded to the scene located on Palani Road just west of the 38-mile marker in Kailua-Kona.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in from bystanders reporting a single-vehicle (described as an older model white Ford Pickup) had rolled over on Palani Road and landed on an embankment above the roadway. Following the collision, two occupants of the vehicle (described as a male and female in their 50s) had self-extricated from the vehicle and bystanders provided basic medical care until emergency crews arrived at the scene.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medics conducted a medical assessment of the two occupants at the scene, however, both occupants had refused further medical treatment or transport at the scene.
Due to emergency vehicles on the roadway and also the location of the vehicle, HPD officers closed all lanes of Palani Road between Henry Street and Konalani Street/Kealaka'a Street intersections while emergency crews worked at the scene and tow truck work to remove the vehicle from the embankment it was lodged on and clean the roadway.
Traffic due to a backlog in the area related to the road closure, HPD officers created a contra-flow on Henry Street between Palani Road to Queen Kaahumanu Highway to help alleviate the traffic.
Palani Road was later reopened to all traffic just after 1:11 pm Friday afternoon.
