Kainaliu Information Update for October 7th, 2019

8 people taken to the hospital following a three-vehicle accident in Kainaliu Monday evening (October 7th).

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a three-vehicle accident in Kainaliu, North Kona Monday evening (October 7th).


The initial call came at 4:56 pm and crews from the Keauhou, Kailua, and Captain Cook Fire Stations along with HPD officers from the Kona Patrol responded to the scene located at the 79-7300 block of Mamalahoa Highway (Highway 11) in Kainaliu.


Upon the arrival of HFD and HPD crews, witnesses reported three vehicles collided on Highway 11 fronting Lanakila Church in Kainaliu, blocking the southbound (Ka'u Bound) lane of traffic. Numerous occupants within all three vehicles were injured and had self extricated from vehicles awaiting the arrival of emergency crews with bystanders assisting with basic medical care.


Once on HFD arrived on scene, they immediately began triaging patients at the scene and then later transported a total of 8 people (ages and gender were not disclosed or given) in serious condition to the Kona Community Hospital for further treatment.


HPD assisted with contra-flowing traffic around the accident and had both lanes of traffic flowing just after 6:45 pm Monday evening.
