Kalaoa Information Update for May 17th, 2019

Fire damages a bedroom in a unit at Lokahi Apartments Complex in Kalaoa, North Kona Friday Morning (May 17th)

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) responded to a report of small fire/smoke coming from an apartment unit in the Lokahi Apartments Complex in Kalaoa, North Kona Friday morning (May 17th).


The initial call came in at 11:32 am Friday morning and crews from the Makalei, Kailua, and Keauhou Fire Stations along with Battalion 2 responded to the scene located at Building 9 of the Lokahi Apartments Complex. Upon the arrival of HFD crews, residences reported grey and black smoke was coming from an apartment unit located on the bottom floor of the building. Complex manager and maintenance staff immediately evacuated all units of Building 9 as a precaution until HFD crews arrived on scene.


Once HFD crews arrived on scene, they immediately worked to find source of the smoke coming from the unit and discovered smoldering fire was coming a bedroom in the unit and worked to contain the fire from spreading further. Crews were able to have the fire under control at 11:50 am Friday morning and continued with salvage and overhauling/mop-up operations.


No injuries were reported and the American Red Cross is responding to scene to help the family that was displaced/effected by fire. Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
