Fire damages a residence in the Kalapana Seaview subdivision in Puna Thursday morning (January 9th).
The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to reports of a structure fire in the Kalapana Seaview subdivision in Puna Thursday morning (January 9th).
The initial call came in at 9:25 am Thursday morning and HFD crews from the Pahoa, Paradise Park, Kea'au Fire Stations along with Battalion 1, volunteers from the Ainaloa station, and HPD officers from the Puna Patrol responded to the scene located at the 12-7000 block of Pu'ulena Street in the Kalapana Seaview subdivision.
Upon the arrival of HFD crews, neighbors reported a residence (described a single-story family dwelling) was reported to be fully engulfed in flames with heavy smoke showing. Neighbors also verified that none of the occupants were in the residence at the time of the fire.
Once HFD crews arrived on scene, they also found the residence fully engulfed and immediately worked to gain control of the fire. HFD crews had the fire under control at 10:00 am and later declared the fire out at 10:10 am Thursday morning and shortly thereafter, began overhauling and salvaging operations.
The fire caused an estimated $270,000 in damage and two people were displaced as a result of the fire and were being assisted by the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation and no injuries were reported.
