The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a major two-vehicle collision on Hawaii Belt Road (Highway 190) in Kaloko early Saturday morning (February 29th).
The initial call came in at 5:15 am Saturday morning and HFD crews from the Kailua, Makalei, and Keauhou Fire Stations along with HPD officers from the Kona Patrol responded to the scene located just north of the 35-mile marker on Hawaii Belt Road in Kaloko.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came initially that a single-vehicle (described as a Honda sedan) was involved in a collision with the embankment and operator (described as a male in his 20's) of that vehicle suffered major injuries and awaiting the arrival of emergency crews.
Once emergency crews arrived on the scene, HFD personnel immediately began an assessment on the male patient of the initial collision. During their assessment, male then fled on foot from emergency crews and leading HPD officers into search/pursuit. Other HPD officers en-route to the scene then later discovered another single-vehicle (that vehicle is being described as a Lexus sedan) rollover collision with the operator (being also described as a male in his 20's) of that vehicle pinned/trapped on Hawaii Belt Road approximately 300 yards north of the first scene near the intersection of Makalapua Road.
HFD crews immediately after arriving at the second scene, worked to safely extricate (with the use of the Jaws of Life) the male from the vehicle. Once extricated, HFD Medics then transported that patient to the Kona Community Hospital in serious condition.
HPD initially though vehicles were involved in two separate collisions, however, during their investigation determined that both vehicles were involved in one collision. Both vehicles were involved head-on collision south of Makalapua Road and Hawaii Belt Road intersection, which caused one of the vehicles to roll over. After the collision, one of the vehicles was trying to make an attempt to leave the scene, however unable to continue further and was found near the 35-mile marker, where the operator of the fled on foot from emergency crews.
As of 7:25 am Saturday morning, HPD continues with its search for the operator in surrounding neighborhoods. It's unknown at this time if the suspect (operator) was involved in other incidents prior to the collision.
Hawaii Belt Road between Hina Lani Street and Makalapua Road was closed to all traffic while crews worked to clear the scene (approximately 1/3 mile in length). Hawaii Belt Road was reopened to traffic at 7:19 am Saturday morning.
