One person seriously injured following a two-vehicle collision on Queen Kaahumanu Highway (Highway 19) at the intersection with Hina Lani Street in Kaloko, North Kona Sunday afternoon (October 18th).

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway (Highway 19) and Hina Lani Street in Kaloko, North Kona Sunday afternoon (October 18th).
The initial call came at 2:08 pm Sunday afternoon and HFD crews from the Kailua-Kona and Keauhou Fire Stations along with HPD Officers from the Kona Patrol responded to the scene located at the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Hina Lani Street.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in that two-vehicles (both vehicles being described as a Dark Blue Kia sedan and Cement Grey Toyota pickup) involved in a rear-end type collision near the intersection in the northbound (Waikoloa bound) lanes, in the course of the collision, Kia sedan had rolled over several times before land upright and block all lane of traffic. Bystanders tended to one patient (described as a female in her 30s) who suffered serious injuries as a result of the collision and awaited the arrival of emergency crews.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD crews arrived at the scene and they immediately took over medical care of the patient at the scene. HFD Medics then transported to the female patient to the Kona Community Hospital in serious condition. Other occupants of the vehicles suffered no injuries and declined further medical treatment or transport.
Due to emergency crews working at the scene, HPD officers temporarily closed all northbound lanes of Queen Kaahumanu Highway near the Hina Lani Street intersection. At about 2:45 pm Sunday afternoon, HFD and HPD crews were able to clear one northbound lane of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and contra flowing traffic in the area until tow trucks arrived at the scene and could clear the vehicles from the roadway.
HPD continues to investigate the incident.
