Kalopa Information Update for November 10th, 2020

The Hawaii Police Department (HPD) has opened a coroner's inquest investigation following a fatal residential fire in Kalopa Tuesday morning (November 10th).

Hawaiʻi Police Department Criminal Investigation Section – Area I Lieutenant Rio S. Amon-Wilkins Phone: (808) 961-2252 Report no.: 20-086099 Hawaiʻi Island Police are investigating a fatal structure fire that occurred in Kalopa on Tuesday morning (November 10).

Police and Fire officials were dispatched to the scene shortly after 11:30 a.m. today for a reported structure fire at a residence on Kalaniai Road in Kalopa Mauka. Responding personnel found the single-story trailer-type structure fully engulfed in flames.


After firefighters extinguished the flames, a severely burnt body was discovered in the remnants.

The Area I Criminal Investigation Section is continuing this investigation which is currently classified as a fire and a coroner’s inquest.  The identity of the victim and the cause of the fire are still under investigation. 

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
