The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a medical emergency at Kamilo Beach in Ka'ū Thursday evening (April 22nd).

The initial call came in at 9:29 pm Thursday evening and HFD Crews from the Pāhala and Na'alehu Fire Stations along with HPD Officers from the Ka'ū Patrol responded to the scene located at Kamilo Beach along the Ka'ū Coastline.

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in that a diver (described as a male in his 50s) was found unresponsive in a tide pool near Kamilo Beach and other members of the diver's party had immediately pulled the victim out of the water and immediately began life-saving measures until emergency crews arrived at the scene.

Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, due to the location and access to Kamilo Beach is limited, HFD Crews had to utilize 4x4 vehicles to reach the scene. Once at Kamilo Beach, HFD Medic personnel continued with life-saving measures, however, a short time later ceased all life-saving measures, and the patient was declared DOA at the scene.

The scene was later turned over to HPD Officers, where they began their investigation into the incident, and HFD personnel later assisted HPD with the extrication of the victim from Kamilo Beach.

HPD continues to investigate the incident.
