The Hawai'i Fire Department (HFD) along with Hawai'i Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a vehicle vs pedestrian collision on Highway 19 (Māmalahoa Highway) in Kamuela, South Kohala Wednesday evening (December 15th).
The initial call came in at 8:16 pm Wednesday evening and HFD Crews from the Waimea Fire Station along with HPD Officers from the South Kohala Patrol and Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) responded to the scene located near the intersection of Puanuanu Place and Highway 19 in Kamuela, South Kohala.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came into 911 reporting a vehicle (being described as a Nissan Pickup) struck a pedestrian (being described as a male approximately in his teens) on Highway 19. Immediately following the collision, bystanders and nearby residents provided medical care to the male pedestrian until emergency crews arrived at the scene.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medic immediately took over medical care of the male patient at the scene. Shortly thereafter, HFD Medic then transported the male patient to the North Hawai'i Community Hospital, with his condition listed as critical at the time of transport.
Due to the patient's condition at the time of transport, HPD Patrol Officers closed the west (Waimea) bound lane of Highway 19 near Puanuanu Place while TEU Officers arrived to the scene to begin their investigation into the collision.
HPD continues to investigate the collision.
