One person fatally injured in a single-vehicle collision on Highway 137 (Government Beach Road) in Kapoho, Puna Monday evening (June 14th).

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision on Highway 137 (Government Beach Road) in Kapoho, Puna Monday evening (June 14th).
The initial call came in at 5:08 pm Monday evening and HFD Crew from the Pāhoa Fire Station along with HPD Officers from the Puna Patrol and Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) responded to the scene located at the intersection of Highway 137 and Papaya Farms Road in Kapoho, Puna.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in that a single-vehicle (described as a moped, exact model and make not immediately given) had collided with a tree at the intersection of Papaya Farms Road and Highway 137 and ended up in a ditch along Highway 137 in Kapoho. The operator (described as a female in her 40s) had a suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision and bystanders that witnessed the collision immediately began life-saving measures until emergency crews arrived at the scene. It was noted that the female operator was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medic personnel took over life-saving measures on the female patient. However, shortly after arriving at the scene, HFD Medic personnel ceased all life-saving measures and declared the female patient DOA at the scene.
Following the declaration by HFD Medic personnel, HPD Officers closed Highway 137 at the intersection of Papaya Farms Road while TEU Officers arrived at the scene and began their investigation into the collision.
HPD - TEU continues to investigate the collision.
This is the 12th fatal traffic collision to occur on Hawaii Island Roadways for 2021.
