Kaumana Information Update for June 3rd, 2020

Hawaiʻi Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit Sergeant Chris Correia Phone: (808) 961-2391 Report No. 20-042065 A male that died from injuries sustained in a two motor vehicle crash that occurred on Tuesday morning, (June 2) on Daniel K. Inouye Highway near the 8.5-mile marker has been identified.

The 65-year-old male has been identified as Charles K. Makanui Jr., of Kona.

The Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a Negligent Homicide investigation and is asking that anyone who may have witnessed or have any information regarding the incident to contact Officer Clifford Antonio of the Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit at (808) 961-2339.

This is the 9th traffic fatality this year compared to 9 at this time last year.

 

First Update:


The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a critical (later fatal) two-vehicle collision on Daniel K. Inouye Highway near the intersection of Kaumana Drive in Kaumana Tuesday morning (June 2nd).


The initial call came in at 10:13 am Tuesday morning and HFD crews from the Kaumana, Kea'au, and Central Fire Stations along with HPD officers from the South Hilo Patrol and Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) responded to the scene located north of the intersection of Daniel K. Inouye Highway (Saddle Road/Highway 200) and Kaumana Drive (close to the 9-mile marker) in Kaumana.


Preliminary details at this time the HIRSC team has confirmed that a T-Bone type collision involving a semi-truck with no trailer and Honda Midsize SUV had collided at the intersection causing major damage to both vehicles.


HIRSC has also confirmed this is a fatal two-vehicle collision that occurred on Daniel K. Inouye Highway and roadway will be closed for a prolonged amount of time (approximately 5-6 hours) due to TEU officers conducting their investigation into the collision and also removal of the vehicles from the scene of the collision.


Daniel K. Inouye Highway is closed from Puainako Street Extension junction to Pohakuloa at Old Saddle Road junction and at the Highway 190 junction.
