The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a structure fire in Kaumana early Sunday morning (March 1st).
The initial call came in at 1:42 am Sunday morning and HFD crews from the Kaumana, Central, and Haihai Fire Stations along with Battalion 1, Fire Prevention Bureau Inspector, and HPD officers from the South Hilo Patrol responded to the scene located at the 100 block of Wilder Road in Kaumana.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in from neighbors that rear section of a residence (described as a single-story family dwelling) on Wilder Road was fully engulfed with heavy fire and smoke showing.
Once emergency crews arrived on scene, first arriving HFD crews immediately went into an offensive mode of fire attack into the interior of the residence. Other responding HFD crews worked to secure a water supply and made a defensive mode of fire attack to the exterior of the structure. HFD crews later determined the fire had made substantial extension into the roof area and worked to prevent a roof collapse. HFD crews had the fire under control at 2:27 am Sunday morning and began overhaul and mop-up operations shortly thereafter.
The fire was fully extinguished at 3:59 am Sunday morning and Fire Prevention Bureau Inspector along with HPD began their investigation into the cause of the fire.
No foul play is suspected and no injuries were reported. The fire caused an estimated $302,175 in damage with $33,575 was saved.
American Red Cross is assisting occupants displaced as a result of the fire.
