Kawaihae Information Update for May 29th, 2021

One person seriously injured following a fall from the bed of a pickup on Kawaihae Road (Highway 270) in Kawaihae, South Kohala Saturday evening (May 29th).

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a medical emergency (public accident) fronting a business on Akoni Pule Highway (Highway 270) in Kawaihae, South Kohala Saturday evening (May 29th).

The initial call came in at 7:54 pm Saturday evening and HFD Crews from the South Kohala Fire Station along with HPD Officers from the South Kohala Patrol responded to the scene located at 61-3600 block of Akoni Pule Highway in Kawaihae.

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in from bystanders reporting a person (described as a male in his 20s) had fallen out of the bed of a pickup truck (described as a Toyota Midsize Pickup, reported to be lifted) onto Akoni Pule Highway following taking the turn too quickly from Kawaihae Road. The male patient following the fall was reported to be conscious, however, disoriented. Bystanders provided basic medical care until emergency crews arrived at the scene.

Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medic personnel took over medical care to the male patient at the scene and prepared the patient for transport. HFD Medic then transported the male patient to the North Hawaii Community Hospital in serious condition for further medical treatment.

HPD continues to investigate the incident.
