Critical Motor Vehicle Accident leads to the temporary closure of Kuakini Highway in Keauhou on Tuesday morning (November 19th).
The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) are on scene of a critical motor vehicle accident that occurred on Kuakini Highway in Keauhou, North Kona early Tuesday morning (November 19th).
The initial call came in at 5:51 am Tuesday morning and HFD crews from the Keauhou and Kailua-Kona Fire Stations along with HPD officers from the Kona Patrol responded to the scene located on Kuakini Highway approximately 1/4 mile north of Kamehameha III Road in Keauhou.
Upon the arrival of HFD and HPD units, witnesses reported 2 vehicles (collided head-on on Kuakini Highway just north of Kamehameha III Road and bystanders were assisting multiple parties injured as a result of the crash and awaited the arrival of HFD and HPD units.
Once on HFD crews arrived on scene, HFD personnel immediately worked to extricate the remaining patients trapped within the vehicles and took over medical care for all the patients at the scene, one of which required advanced life-saving measures. HFD Medics transported a total of patients 3 patients to the Kona Community Hospital, with their conditions varying from good condition to extremely critical condition, where at this time, their conditions remain unknown.
Once all patients were transported to the hospital, HFD crews later turned the scene over to HPD officers from the Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU), where they began their investigation into the collision.
Kuakini Highway between La'aloa Avenue and Kamehameha III Road is closed to all traffic and expected to be closed for the next 5-6 hours. All motorists must use Ali'i Drive or Mamalahoa Hwy (Highway 180) as alternate routes for travel between Keauhou and Kailua-Kona.
