Diver in Critical Condition following a incident at Onekahakaha Beach Park Friday Night (May 17th)
The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to report of an swimmer in distress at Onekahakaha Beach in Keaukaha, South Hilo Friday night (May 17th).
The initial call came in 8:41 pm and crews from the Waiakea and Central Fire Stations along with Battalion 1 responded to the scene located at the tidal pools at Onekahakaha Beach Park. Upon the arrival of HFD crews, initial reports a several divers that were night diving offshore of Onekahakaha Beach Park at the time of the incident. When one of the divers (victim described as male) was having difficulty breathing and was assisted by a friend back to shore. Once on shore, friend then reported the victim went unresponsive in shallow waters of the tidal flats, where HFD crews arriving on scene, immediately initiated life-saving measures on the victim.
The victim later was extricated from the tidal flats (using a stokes basket/stretcher) to an HFD Medic where he was transported in extremely critical condition to the Hilo Medical Center, where his condition remains unknown at this time.
HPD is currently investigating the incident.
