The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to an apparent drowning at O'oma Beach (North of Kohanaiki Beach/Pine Tree Surf Spot) Tuesday morning (May 26th).
The initial call came in at 10:02 am Tuesday morning and HFD crews from the Kailua-Kona Fire Station along with HPD officers from the Kona Patrol responded to the scene located at O'oma Beach.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, bystanders reported a male (described as being in his 60's) was surfing offshore of O'oma Beach prior to being found in the water unresponsive. Bystanders then brought the male back to shore where they immediately began life-saving measures until emergency crews arrived at the scene.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medics immediately took over life-saving measures and later transported the male victim to the Kona Community Hospital in extremely critical condition, where at this time his condition remains unknown.
HPD is investigating the incident.
