Kona Information Update for April 21st, 2019



The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department responded to reports of motorcycle vs. vehicle (SUV) accident that occurred on Palani Road near the Palani junction in Kailua-Kona Saturday evening (April 20th).


Initial call came at 5:40 pm and crews from the Kailua and Keauhou Fire Stations responded to the scene and upon the arrival of crews, witnesses reported a motorcyclist collided with an SUV Palani Road near the Palani junction and suffered extremely critical injuries. Once crews arrived on scene, they immediately began life saving measures on the motorcyclist and began their medical evaluation of the occupants of the SUV for any injuries.


Crews ceased all life saving measures and later pronounced the motorcyclist dead on arrival (DOA) and continued their medical evaluation on the occupants of the SUV. 3 occupants of the SUV (ages ranging from 2 to 25 years old) were transported to the Kona Community Hospital in fair condition.


HFD turned over the scene to HPD officers and traffic investigators, where they immediately began their investigation into the cause of the crash. HPD closed Palani Road from Hina Lani Street to Kona Christian Academy (Makua Lani Christian Academy upper campus) and Hwy 180 at the 9-mile marker near Palani junction while HPD conducted their investigation.


Palani Road and Hwy 180 was later reopened to all traffic at 9:20 pm Saturday evening.
