Kona Information Update for May 10th, 2019

Boat Capsized offshore of Kohanaiki Beach in North Kona

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and United States Coast Guard (USGS) responded to a report of capsized vessel (Fishing Boat) a 1/4 mile offshore of Wawahiwaa Point near Kohanaiki Beach (locally known as Pine Tree beach) in North Kona Friday afternoon (May 10th).

Initial call came in just after 1:15 pm Friday afternoon and crews from the Kailua Fire Station along with Battalion 2 and Chopper 1 and 2 responded to the scene. Upon the arrival of HFD crews, emergency call came in from a party aboard the vessel advising them of the incident and that there was 4 people aboard the vessel.

Once on scene, HFD crews determined that private fishing and commercial vessels in the area heard the emergency call for help and responded to the scene and assist with rescuing the 4 people on that vessel. They later brought the parties back to the Honokohau Harbor to be evaluated by HFD Medics. They later determined the parties aboard the vessel suffered no injuries.

DLNR and USGS is currently investigating the incident and determining if any fluid was spilled as a result of the incident.
