The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) is at the scene of a confirmed brush fire in the area of Akoni Pule Highway (Highway 270) at the 13-mile marker near Lapakahi State Park that started Friday afternoon (September 25th).
The initial call came in 1:01 pm Friday afternoon and HFD crews from the North Kohala, South Kohala, Waimea, and Waikoloa Fire Stations along with Battalion 2, Chopper 2, volunteers from the Kohala Ranch and Anekona Stations, and HPD officers from the North Kohala patrol are currently at the scene.
No size estimate was given, however, one of our HIRSC Administrators was traveling in the area prior to the initial dispatch immediately notified HFD of the fire, which was burning along the makai (ocean) side of Akoni Pule Highway and winds were blowing towards the mauka (mountain) direction.
However, due to the windy conditions in the area, the brush fire had since jumped Highway 270 and burning on both sides of the highway. Smoke from the brush fire was visible from Kawaihae Village.
HPD has closed Akoni Pule Highway in the area of the 13-mile marker in North Kohala due to the smoky conditions in the area.
This ongoing incident and will provide an update as it becomes available.
