The Hawai'i Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawai'i Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a technical rescue (search and rescue) incident at a residence off of Highway 19 (Hawai'i Belt Road) in Laupāhoehoe, North Thursday evening (February 25th).

The initial call came in at 7:40 pm Thursday evening and HFD Crews from the Laupāhoehoe, Honoka'a, and Waiākea (Rescue Company 2) Fire Station along with Battalion 1 and HPD Officers from the North Hilo District responded to the scene located off of Highway 19 in the area of the 28-mile marker in Laupāhoehoe, North Hilo.

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, a report came into emergency crews initially reporting a male party missing after he was reported to be cutting trees along a cliffside near a residence off of Highway 19 in Laupāhoehoe, North Hilo, and failed to return back after sunset on Thursday evening. Reporting party awaited the arrival of emergency crews to begin a search.

Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, they immediately began a search of the surrounding area, and HFD Crews first on scene located the male party down a 75-foot cliffside below the residence and requested assistance from HFD Rescue Personnel to assist with extrication from the cliffside.

Once rescue crews arrived at the scene, they conducted high-angle rope extrication and brought the male party back up to the top of the cliff to be evaluated by personnel from an HFD Medic, however, the party declined any need for EMS at the scene and was uninjured.
