Bicyclist seriously injured following an auto vs bicycle accident on Akoni Pule Highway (Highway 270) near Mahukona Beach Park in North Kohala Sunday morning (October 18th).

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of an auto vs bicycle collision on Akoni Pule Highway (Highway 270) near Mahukona Beach Park in North Kohala Sunday morning (October 18th).
The initial call came in at 9:34 am Sunday morning and HFD crews from the North Kohala Fire Station and Waimea Fire Station along with Chopper 2 (from the South Kohala Fire Station) and HPD officers from the North Kohala Patrol responded to the scene located on Akoni Pule Highway at the 15-mile marker (just north of Mahukona Beach Park entrance/road) in North Kohala.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in that a bicyclist and vehicle (described as a Silver older model Honda Pilot) had collided on Akoni Pule Highway at the 15-mile marker. The bicyclist (described as a female in her 50s) was reported to have suffered serious injuries as a result of the collision and bystanders were providing basic aid until emergency crews arrived at the scene.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medics immediately began advanced medical care for the bicyclist and prepared the patient to be medivac by Chopper 2 to the hospital. HPD officers temporarily closed Akoni Pule Highway to allow Chopper 2 to land near the scene.
Chopper 2 arrived at the scene and immediately transported the patient to the North Kohala Community Hospital in serious condition.
HPD continues to investigate the incident.
