Mountain View Information Update for April 26th, 2021

One person in custody and another fatally injured following apparent weapons and standoff incident that occurred in the Aloha Estates subdivision in Mountain View, Puna Monday afternoon (April 26th).

A 32-year-old Puna man was taken into custody without incident following a shooting that left a 59-year-old Volcano man dead.


On Monday, April 26, 2021, at about 12:37 p.m., police responded to a residence on Nau Nani Road in Volcano after receiving a report of a shooting victim. It was also reported that the suspect was seen walking from the scene towards a nearby residence.


The department’s Special Response Team tactical unit responded and using the armored vehicle, confirmed the suspect’s presence within the residence. Negotiators initiated contact with the suspect, who initially refused to exit the residence. At 3:15 p.m., the suspect exited the residence and was taken into custody.


Daris Paul Pacheco of Volcano is being held in the Hilo police cellblock for suspicion of second-degree murder while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section continue the investigation.


Detectives are withholding the identity of the victim pending confirmation of his identification and notification of the next of kin.


The nearby residents were evacuated for safety concerns, however, the evacuation was lifted after the suspect was arrested and the scene was rendered safe.


There were no other injuries reported during the shooting incident.

The Hawaii Police Department (HPD) along with the Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) responded to a report of an apparent weapons incident that occurred in the Aloha Estates subdivision in Mountain View, Puna Monday afternoon (April 26th).


The initial call came in at 12:38 pm Monday afternoon and HPD Officers from the Puna Patrol along with Special Response Team (SRT), Criminal Investigation Section (CIS), and HFD Crews from the Kea'au Fire Station responded to the scene located at the 18-1900 block of Nau Nani Road (Road 3) in Aloha Estates.


Preliminary details received that an apparent weapons incident had occurred at a residence off of Nau Nani Road in the Aloha Estates subdivision involving neighbors. One person (male with age not immediately disclosed) had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest and the responsible party (described as a male also age not immediately disclosed) had returned back his own residence and barricaded himself in his own residence.


Following the initial incident, HPD Officers had shut down several streets in the Aloha Estates subdivision near the scene and asked residents to lock their doors and shelter in place until the all-clear was given by HPD Officers. HPD SRT Officers later arrived at the scene continued to negotiate with the suspect to end the barricade peacefully. At about 3:30 pm Monday afternoon, HPD Officers took the male suspect into custody, and Detectives from CIS began their investigation into the incident.


HPD will release further information at a later time, following a further preliminary investigation is completed at the scene.
