The Hawaii Police Department (HPD) was involved in a pursuit of a vehicle on Highway 19 (Mamalahoa Highway) that started in the Pepe'ekeo and later ended in Ka'awali'i Gulch in North Hilo Wednesday afternoon (December 2nd).
The initial report came in at 2:25 pm Wednesday afternoon when HPD South Hilo Patrol Officers attempted to stop a vehicle (described as a Silver Toyota Corrolla) with three occupants (described as two females and one male) speeding on Highway 19 just outside of Pepe'ekeo, South Hilo. However, the driver failed to stop for HPD Officers and continued on Highway 19 at high rates of speed.
HPD Officers from the North Hilo Patrol and Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) later sighted the vehicle, attempts to stop the vehicle failed, and continued on the pursuit of the vehicle on Highway 19 through Maulua and Laupāhoehoe Gulches and the towns of Papa'aloa and Laupāhoehoe in North Hilo.
As the pursuit continued into Ka'awali'i Gulch, the vehicle got into a collision and became disabled following the collision. HPD Officers later took the three occupants of the vehicle into custody without further incident. All three individuals were then taken to the East Hawaii Detention Center (Hilo Cellblock) for further investigation and questioning.
As a result of the collision, HPD officers briefly closed one lane of Highway 19 at Ka'awali'i Gulch while they continued their investigation into the collision and the pursuit. The vehicle was later towed away from the scene taken to Hilo Police Station for further processing.
No other vehicles were damaged or injuries were reported related to the vehicle pursuit.
It's not known at this time if the vehicle and individuals taken into custody are related to the shooting incident in Pāpa'ikou.
HPD continues their investigation into the incident.
