North Kona Information Update # 2 for May 30th, 2019
Fatal Pedestrian accident closes a portion of Hualalai Road early Thursday morning (May 30th)
The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to and are on scene of an apparent fatal pedestrian accident on Hualalai Road fronting the Kailua-Kona Public Library early Thursday morning (May 30th).
The initial call came in at 12:52 am and crews from the Kailua-Kona Fire Station responded to the scene located on Hualalai Road fronting the Kailua-Kona Public Library. Upon the arrival of HFD crews, nearby residences reported hearing a collision and headed to the scene found the pedestrian (described as a male in his 40's) with traumatic injuries and unresponsive, was apparently struck by vehicle that left scene of the incident and continued traveling in an unknown direction.
Once HFD crews arrived on scene, they immediately began life-saving measures on male victim at the scene. HFD medic personnel later declared the male victim dead on arrival (DOA) and turned the scene over to HPD officers to begin their investigation.
Hualalai Road between Kuakini Highway and Ali'i Drive has been closed to all traffic while HPD's Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) Officers, who are currently on scene, begin their investigation into the circumstances and cause of the accident.
Road closure is anticipated to last for at least several hours.
